For many, the summer months are a time to take a vacation. Whether you’re traveling domestically or internationally, it’s easy to get caught up in the experience and your surroundings — and open yourself up for financial catastrophes that could ruin your trip. We share a few tips for protecting your money, travel documents and valuables as you travel.
Keep your valuables somewhere that cannot be easily snatched
Avoid carrying your passport, cash and credit cards in a backpack or a purse. These items can be easily stolen before you even have a chance to react. Consider purchasing a money pouch as a way to keep your valuables hidden.
Lighten your wallet
Leave local department store and infrequently used credit cards at home. The less cash and fewer credit cards you carry with you on vacation, the less you’ll have to deal with if your wallet does go missing.
Be smart at the ATM
If the ATM is located in an area that is not well lit or if the area is overcrowded, consider waiting for the next machine you find. When you do take out money: cover the keyboard as you enter your pin, always take your receipt and avoid counting your money in front of the ATM.
Be vigilant, not just in crowded areas
While pickpockets are most likely to frequent crowded areas, it’s always important to pay extra attention when you’re in an unfamiliar environment. Try to stay in well-lit areas that you know are safe, to help avoid any potential risky situations.
Let your bank know your travel plans, and be aware of all account activity
If you’ll be heading out of town, alert your bank of your plans before you leave. This will help avoid any declined messages at the register if your account has been “frozen” because of unusual spending activity. Always keep the bank’s phone number handy so you can call if there’s an issue.
